Brethren and Friends of Palmer,

Now that the 101st annual New Year breakfast, marking the end of the Holiday season, is a thing of the past we can look forward to 2012 with all it has to offer. Our newly installed officers are settling into their new positions and busily preparing for degree work and myriad other events on the calendar.

Because this message is composed early in January for the February Templegram, many planned January activities will yet take place. Of note, were the school of instruction on January 12th, the Fellowcraft degrees on January 13th and participation of PM Pat Cholka and myself in the Grand Lodge Secretaries Conference in Madison on January 21st and 22nd.

For those who frequent the Lodge environs, there has also been continuing progress in maintenance and upkeep in several areas. JW Rodney Van Tassel has assaulted the errant bushes and box alders with his trusty chainsaw, while SW Steven Holmblad repaired the unstable bases on the lodge room chairs. These efforts are certainly appreciated. Just a reminder to the lodges and appendant bodies who use our facility, if you notice something amiss or needing attention, please make an effort to inform the trustees. The trustees are doing their best to make the building serviceable and comfortable for everyone using it, so please lend them your support.

In closing it should be mentioned that our Lodge facility is now home to three Masonic Lodges, Kilbourn Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, Golden Rule Chapter OES and Bethel 2 Jobs Daughters, as well a church group. It is certainly rewarding to see the building utilized by so many organizations, but please be aware that scheduling events other than your designated meeting dates may result in scheduling conflicts. Be sure to contact either Brothers Lee Wackman or Art Karos to arrange for a time and date well in advance of your planned activity. Scheduled events will be noted on the bulletin board calendar in the Secretary’s office, on the Templegram calendar or the Palmer Lodge website.

Brethren and Friends of Palmer,

The year 2011 is now history, and to paraphrase Tom Wilson, the “Ziggy” cartoonist, we have a whole new year to mess up”! Seriously, last year was a great year at Palmer Lodge and we accomplished about everything we set out to do. As Worshipful Master, I could not have asked for a better or more productive year. Together we hosted many successful events, including those celebrating our centennial, conferred many degrees, improved the building and generally raised the bar as to what a Lodge of Freemasonry is all about. We still have challenges, but I’m confident the efforts and level of dedication of all our officers and members will be more than equal to them. Thank you all for making 2011 a great year at Palmer!

December was a very busy month. On the 2nd we initiated two entered apprentices; Brothers Timothy Meyer and Matt Chiefro. On the 4th, we hosted our now annual Pizza with Santa to the enjoyment of 68 children. Each year this event has grown and proven more successful under the guidance of Bro. Jack L. Jones, our venerable Secretary. Finally, we installed our officers for 2012 on December 10th. I would again like to thank the members of Palmer Lodge for allowing me to serve as Worship Master for a second term, congratulate the newly installed officers, and extend our appreciation to all that contributed to this event.

Finally, congratulations are in order from Palmer Lodge to Bro. Art Karos as our 2011 Mason of the Year. Bro. Karos has contributed immeasurably to our Lodge as a dedicated officer, poster of candidates, head of the Trustees, and to numerous other events and tasks. Your efforts are appreciated!

Mark your calendars for January – on January 1st (New Years morning) we will be hosting our annual breakfast. Remember, this is open to not only brethren, but friends. If you have a prospective candidate it would be an excellent opportunity for introduction. On January 12th a School of Instruction will be held at Independence Lodge with Palmer Lodge participating, and on January 27th we will be having our first Stated Meeting of the New Year.

Brethren and Friends of Palmer,

The year is fast coming to a close and Palmer Lodge is again looking forward to another dynamic and prosperous year. With the election of officers for 2012, I again find myself as Worshipful Master, and thank you again for your confidence and trust in my abilities to lead our Lodge in the ensuing year. This past year has been very rewarding for me personally, and the experience has taught me much about the operation of the Lodge and, more importantly, about the high caliber and exceptional level of dedication of the officers and members of Palmer Lodge. In looking back over the year, we have been very successful in attracting new members, conferring degrees, conducting our routine business and events, maintaining and improving our building, and celebrating our centennial anniversary. The striking aspect of these accomplishments is that our very solid line of officers, for the most part, is relatively new Master Masons. Succession is paramount in the longevity of any organization and these individuals would indicate that Palmer Lodge is developing a healthy succession base. Thus, in addition to our regular endeavors, we are making significant strides in securing a sound future for Palmer Lodge in particular, and Freemasonry overall. Well done Brethren!

With this said, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the elected and appointed officers for 2012: Senior Warden Steve Holmblad, Junior Warden Rodney Van Tassel, Secretary/Treasurer Jack Jones (his 30th year!), Chaplain Lee Wackman, Senior Deacon Richard Fischer, Junior Deacon Arthur Karos, Senior Steward Thomas Fischer, Junior Steward Walter Wooley, Tiler Dale Van Dyke and Trustees Richard Fischer and Dale Van Dyke. Again, congratulations and I look forward to another exciting year in working with you. Mark your calendars for our installation on Saturday, December 10th.

On October 16th Palmer Lodge initiated Br. Art Karos’ son Michael as our newest Entered Apprentice. The Degree was well attended by many visiting brethren from various lodges, and we congratulate Brother Michael Karos and welcome him into our Masonic family. Palmer Lodge will also be conferring the Entered Apprentice Degree on December 2nd for two more candidates so mark your calendars.

For those that missed the dramatic reading of “Defense of the Ruffians” on October 22nd it was an awesome presentation. The response from those attending was very favorable and well received. On behalf of myself and Palmer Lodge I would like to commend Bros. Pat Cholka, PM, and Jack Jones, PM, for their preparation efforts and excellent dramatic performance(s), and Br. Dale Van Dyke for his outstanding role in leading the post production discussion.

I would also like to announce a new tenant at the Northwest Masonic Center. Milwaukee Harmony Masonic Lodge No. 261 will begin meeting at our facility on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month. Milwaukee Harmony is a very active Lodge made up of a wonderful group of brethren, and will certainly enhance the vitality of the Northwest Masonic Center. We extend a warm and gracious welcome to these brethren, and look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship.

Brethren and Friends of Palmer,

This will be a relatively short message in as much as October is yet to be finished before the November message is required by our venerable secretary Jack L. Jones.

The first two days of October included an Angel Fund Trivia Night on Saturday and a broasted chicken dinner on Sunday. Both events were moderately successful considering the significant sports event weekend that ensued. We either picked a bad weekend or the sports fans had their priorities mixed-up!

On November 13th Palmer Lodge will be hosting its annual Junior Warden’s Chili Cook-off. Last year Bro. Chuck Carroll of George Washington 1776 Lodge took the trophy. Again, we are challenging District lodges to vie in the competition to earn bragging rights to the best chili recipe. It appears however, that the winner is not necessarily the lodge with the tastiest chili, but the one bringing alone the largest voting base – whatever it takes!. If your lodge is interested in competing, please contact our Junior Warden Steve Holmblad.

Please note that our Table Lodge scheduled for November 4th, has been rescheduled for the month of January.

Brethren and Friends of Palmer,

It’s difficult to believe that autumn is upon us and the year is fast coming to a close. Palmer Lodge has had a very busy summer with Stated Meetings and degree work continuing through July and August. I would like to thank the officers and members who gave of their time during these summer months so that we were able to process and move candidates through their degree work. At present we have two Fellowcraft – Bros. Robert Keller and Cory Taylor, and two Entered Apprentices – Bros. Jessie Lee and Matt Chieffro in posting and, two petitioners for the Masters Board and balloting. Since our mission is to make Masons it appears we are doing quite well in that capacity – thanks to your efforts!

October is slated to be a very busy month for Palmer Lodge events as well. On Saturday, October 1st, Brother Lee Wackman has scheduled another of our very popular Trivia Nights to benefit the H.L. Palmer Masonic Angel Fund. These are fun evenings, and you are encouraged to invite friends and families for a good time. It should also be noted that our Angel Fund has received recognition for the outstanding job we are doing from the Masonic Angel Foundation, Inc. – the parent organization. Congratulations to Brothers Lee Wackman and Dick Fischer for their hard work and enthusiasm in this endeavor.

On Sunday, October 2nd, Brothers Dick Fischer and Art Karos have taken on the task to provide another Broasted Chicken Dinner event. This is the second time Palmer Lodge has hosted this event and, if it proves successful, will be a regular feature at Palmer Lodge. Again, gather your families and friends and join us either to dine in or take out.

Another noteworthy event is the reading presentation of “Defense of the Ruffians” at Palmer Lodge on October 22nd. This presentation will be the third of four events commemorating our centennial anniversary. The play will be presented in a tiled Master Mason lodge with refreshments preceding this meeting. “Defense of the Ruffians” is a unique play and should be both enjoyable and enlightening to all Master Masons. As such, for planning purposes, please contact me personally at (262) 424-6993 if you will be attending. Specific details are provided elsewhere in this Templegram.

Further information and details on the above events will disseminated via flyers, on the Palmer website and Facebook.

Brethren, keep in mind that we have scheduled an election of officers for the upcoming year at our October Stated Meeting. This is the time you should be thinking about your commitment and how you would like to serve your lodge in 2012. We are fortunate to have as fine a line of officers as any lodge in the district, and where they have taken Palmer Lodge in the last few years is really commendable. Let’s keep it going!

Finally, many brothers have informed us that in reading our Templegram, they have noted the increased activity and increase in membership in the last couple of years at Palmer. If you are one of these brethren I’m referring to, please come and join us for either a Stated Meeting or the conferral of a degree. Since most of our active officers and brethren have only been Master Masons for a few years, it’s important they recognize the depth and breadth of Palmer’s membership. They are diligent, and work extremely hard to do excellent degree work and promote all of the events and activities at our (your) lodge. You will be most welcome I assure you!

Brethren and Friends of Palmer,

It hardly seems possible that the summer months have now faded into hot weather and vacation memories. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer and are looking forward to a busy event filled resumption of activity at Palmer Lodge.

Traditionally, the Lodge is dark during July and August giving us a brief respite from our Masonic Labors, however this year, because of all the events and pressing Lodge business, we continued our Stated Meetings and attendant Masters’ Board, etc., throughout the summer months.

Our 100th Year Rededication Ceremony on May 22nd was a very nice affair. I would like to personally thank MWPGM Joseph B. Harker and Grand Lodge Officers for presiding over the rededication, as well as Wisconsin Commandry No. 1 for their flag presentation. In addition, the Lodge was given a City of Milwaukee Proclamation presented by Ald. Robert Donovan. The event also resulted in a feature article in the Wisconsin Masonic Journal. To all those that assisted and participated in making this a memorable event, I express the thanks and appreciation of the members of Henry L. Palmer Lodge.

While attending the Annual Communication in Madison I received, on behalf of the Lodge, a 100 Year Certificate from the Grand Lodge, presented by MWPGM Harker. Coincidently, the City of Milwaukee Proclamation and Grand Lodge Certificates are nicely framed, complementary documents, currently residing in the Lodge office. We plan on finding a suitable display area for these anniversary mementos..

Also of note was the Centennial Ball held on June 18th at the North Hills Country Club. Again, this event was well attended and everyone appeared to thoroughly enjoy this “retro-event” with a fine dinner, live music and much socializing. A special thanks to Secretary Jack L. Jones, PM, for his efforts in making this a very successful centennial celebration event.

In July, a number of Palmer Masons, along with their family and friends, enjoyed a Sunday outing at the annual “Zoofari” at the Milwaukee County Zoo sponsored by the Valley of Milwaukee Scottish Rite. This is the second year Palmer Lodge opted to attend this event in lieu of holding our own summer picnic.

As you can see from the aforementioned events, much is happening in and around Palmer Lodge. Much more is also occurring in terms of Lodge business.

We held a Masters Board on July 19th to interview two petitioners and a Stated Meeting on July 22nd for the sole purpose of balloting and reading three more petitions. Another Masters Board is scheduled for August so hopefully we can ballot on more candidates at the August Stated Meeting. New members are the life blood of a Lodge, and with this recent activity, Palmer Lodge is certainly doing well. Of course petitions mean degree work, and Councilor Pat Cholka, PM, is busy scheduling. At this writing, we have two Fellowcraft Degrees slated for August 19th. The rationale is to clear the way for a host of Entered Apprentice Degrees in September and October. This should be a real incentive for our officers to hone their esoteric work skills. For those who haven’t attended Lodge in a while, these degrees offer a wonderful opportunity for you enjoy what Masonry is all about!

Finally, we are still on course to present the “Defense of the Ruffians” on October 22nd. This will be the third of four events dedicated to our 100th anniversary. Because of limited seating in the Lodge Room, we will be asking for advanced notice of attendance as the date draws closer.

Brethren and Friends of Palmer,

Summer is right around the corner and we are approaching July and August – our traditional two months of the lodge going dark. The last six months has been filled with a lot of hard work and dedication in conferring degrees, sprucing up the lodge environs, and continuing the events of our centennial year. I had been made aware by others who have served in the East, that a Worshipful Master’s tenure is not only challenging but fleeting as well – both truly evident. To all the officers and brethren who contributed so much of their time and effort to all that we have accomplished thus far, I hope you have a wonderful summer and come back refreshed and energized to continue propelling Palmer Lodge into it’s second century.

On June 3rd at 7:00 pm we will be conferring the Entered Apprentice degree on Mr. Cory Taylor. The officers of Palmer Lodge have been steadily improving their ritual work with the many degrees put on these last few months; and would like to invite other brethren to come and contribute to the candidate’s degree experience.

On June 18th, Palmer Lodge will be offering the second of four major events celebrating its centennial year. A formal ball will be held at North Hills Country Club in Menomonee Falls. In reading through some of the old Templegrams, such events were not unusual in the history of Palmer Lodge, and it seems quite fitting that a ball should be one of our premier centennial events. The evening, as planned, will include dinner and dancing to a live band in a beautiful venue. This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy a wonderful social evening with that special person. A call to Past Master Jack Jones will provide you with the details of this event.

At our last stated meeting the brethren decided to forgo a Lodge picnic this year in lieu of again attending the Scottish Rite Zoofari on Sunday, July 10. Last year was the first year we opted to participate in this event and it offered the brethren, family and friends the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant visit to the Milwaukee County Zoo. The package includes parking, food and admission to the zoo.

Costs of the total Zoofari package are $23 for adults and $11 for children aged 3 to 12 years. Because the Zoofari replaces the Palmer picnic, the Lodge will contribute $10 toward the cost of adult tickets and $5 for children’s’ tickets of Palmer members. Purchase your tickets directly from Scottish Rite (414) 727-3154 before July 1; then mail a copy of your receipt to Palmer’s Secretary for reimbursement.

Just a reminder that at our next stated meeting on June 24th, we will again be having a light meal at 6:00 pm before the meeting at 7:00 pm. We will be evaluating this new arrangement at the meeting to see if the members are comfortable with the change and want to continue.

Brethren and Friends of Palmer,

Spring is now upon us and it’s that time of year where we traditionally do our spruce up of the lodge environs. A spring clean-up date has been scheduled for Saturday, May 14th from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. Coffee and donuts will be available, and it is hoped that many will join us in tidying up the lodge just before our rededication on May 22nd.

Speaking of the appearance of the lodge, I assume many of you have noticed the recent interior work completed recently. With the exception of the lodge room, the entire interior of the building was repainted including the ceiling. In addition, new carpet was installed in the areas affected by our drainage problem. Also of note, is that all light fixtures (including those in the lodge room) have been refitted and upgraded with energy saving components. In the parking lot area We Energies has installed new fixtures on the poles, and we are no longer using the inefficient lights on the building to illuminate the parking lot. These improvements have required much effort by our Board of Trustees. Kudos, and a very hearty well done goes especially to Brother Arthur Karos for the tremendous amount of time and effort he put into this endeavor.

On a more somber note I must mention the passing of Brother Cy Carney, PM, on April 1st. Cy served as Worshipful Master of Palmer Lodge in 1980. He always could be called on to assist in our degree work and was an ardent supporter of the HL Palmer Masonic Angel Fund. Our prayers are with his widow Daffene and his family. Cy will be missed by his brethren and friends in the Masonic community.

Our first of four special events celebrating our centennial is fast approaching. On Sunday, May 22nd Palmer Lodge will be hosting our Centennial Rededication with a ceremony commencing at 2:00 pm. MWGM Joseph B. Harker will be officiating and refreshments and fellowship will follow. This is a special occasion for Palmer Lodge and I hope many of you will be able to join us as we commence our 2nd Century of Masonic work!

On April 8th the Angel Fund hosted a fund-raising fish fry and bowling event at Elks Lodge #46. On behalf of the Angel Fund, I would like to express our appreciation for all the support the Elks have given us, not only with this event, but since our inception.

On March 18th the Entered Apprentice Degree was conferred on our newly made Brother Robert Keller, and on April 27th Brother Greg Helgeson was raised to Master Mason. Congratulations to both as you continue on your Masonic journey. Palmer Lodge has more degree work coming up in the near future. It’s certainly gratifying and exciting to experience all this degree work and a cordial invitation is extended to the brethren we haven’t seen in awhile to join us. There’s a lot going on a Palmer Lodge!

Brethren and Friends of Palmer,

The last couple of months have been a whirlwind of activity at Palmer Lodge with preparations for the Centennial events being finalized, lodge visitations, degree work and the new officers settling in to their duties. We are definitely making progress in all these areas.

The Centennial Committee is currently concentrating on the May 22, 2011, rededication program. Most Worshipful Grand Master Joseph B. Harker will be officiating, and complimenting the formal rededication ceremony, Brother Wilhelm Doos will be presenting a power-point presentation focusing on the early history of Henry L. Palmer and Palmer Lodge. In Brother Doos’ trial presentation to the Centennial Committee it was apparent that many are unfamiliar with the rich history of Palmer Lodge, and it was suggested that this program be included as part of an orientation session to new members.

A dedicated group of brethren have also made visitations to other lodges including Lafayette, Wisconsin 13, and Myron Reed in the last few weeks. These visitations not only garner points for the Lodge Excellence Award, but expose Palmer members to the Masonic diversity in observing how different lodges operate. These intra-lodge forays have fostered new Masonic friendships as well as being very instructive and informative.

On February 4^th ,Brother Greg Helgeson was passed to the degree of Fellowcraft, and on March 4^th Palmer Lodge will be conferring the Master Mason degree on Dominic LoCicero. In addition, an Entered Apprentice degree is scheduled for March 18^th. This is certainly a tribute to our new officers, having participated in conferring all three degrees and having had only one Stated Meeting thus far. Their level of participation and dedication is commendable.

Finally, the H.L. Palmer Masonic Angel Fund, in conjunction with the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin Masonic Medical Fund, presented a defibulator to the Milwaukee Prepatory School on February 16^th. The Palmer Masonic Angel Fund has received kudos from the parent Masonic Angel Foundation for its level of activity and innovative charitable donations, particularly the novel idea of hygiene kits which have been donated to needy groups from Milwaukee to Green Bay. Brothers Lee Wackman and Bryan Johnson are commended for demonstrating the charitable spirit of Freemasonry and making a statement that our activities need not be confined to the lodge room.

Brethren and Friends of Palmer,

January has certainly come in with a flourish for Palmer Lodge, and somewhat hectic right out of the gate for all of us getting accustomed to our new roles. The Master Mason degree for brother Dale Van Dyke went really well, and a hardy thanks for all those who made the raising of our newest Master Mason a memorable experience for him. A special thanks is in order for District Lecture Frank Mayer and the members of the Scottish Rite Degree Team who are always there to lend a hand.

Not resting on our laurels, we also have another MM degree scheduled for February 4^th and an FC degree scheduled for March 4^th. With all of this work in the offing, an invitation is especially extended to Palmer Masons who have haven’t visited their Lodge in awhile. Witnessing the degree work is not only an excellent refresher course, but also enhances the candidate’s degree experience with the opportunity to meet more of our members.

The H.L. Palmer Masonic Angel Fund will be finishing it’s second full year in March and still growing and reaching out to help needy children. To date, our Angel Fund has touched the lives of almost three thousand children with no end in site. Brother Lee Wackman is foraging ahead by planning a number of fundraisers this year in his continued effort to expand the program’s capabilities. Circle February 26^th on your calendar as the date of yet another of our very popular “Team Trivia Night” fundraisers. This event has gathered a following, and is thoroughly enjoyed by those wanting to test their knowledge in the competition, or those just wanting to sit back and partake in the fun.

In closing this message there is something I would like to share. Some time ago I received a wooden plaque of a generic nature. I don’t recall from where or whom it came, but I placed it on my bookshelf where, on numerous occasions, I find myself drawn to the words inscribed on it:

THE WORK OF A TRUE AND LOYAL MASON

To wear the SQUARE and act upon it in all his daily deeds; to meet all men upon the LEVEL and judge them in accordance with the COMPASS of Truth and CHARITY: to be loyal to his ORDER and ever MASTER himself. To travel ever EASTWARD from the feeble LIGHT of an ENTERED APPRENTICE toward the glorious LIGHT of WISDOM; and finally, to be prepared for the final PASSWORD giving entrance to the presence of THE GRAND MASTER OF THE SUPREME ORDER OF THE UNIVERSE.

Brethren and Friends of Palmer,

Happy New Year! Now that the Holiday Season is for the most part another joyous memory, we can now look ahead to hopefully a busy and prosperous year for Palmer Lodge. This being my first official Templegram message, I would again like to express my gratitude for the faith and trust you have placed in me to lead Palmer Lodge into that New Year. It appears that 2011 is going to be both a busy and exciting year; not only with our regularly scheduled meetings, degree work, traditional annual events and the Angel Fund, but also the 100 year celebration of our Charter. Although the tasks at hand appear imminently imposing, we have a great cadre of officers reflecting a sense of dedication, and much to my amazement, a host of skill and talent. I believe we can get the job done in grand style and have a lot of fun doing it.

The installation on December 11th turned out really well. I would like to personally thank all those who contributed to its success and congratulate all of the newly installed officers. The evening was particularly enhanced with the surprise visit of our Most Worshipful Grand Master Joseph B. Harker. I trust everyone enjoyed the event.

To digress a bit, I would be remiss in not making mention of our annual Pizza with Santa program on December 5^th. It was a resounding success! Sixty-six children enjoyed an afternoon with Mr. Magic, Grandpa and Grandma Palmer, Mr. Meanie and, of course, pizza with the man of the hour – Santa Clause. A special thanks to Jack Jones, Pat Cholka and the others who contributed so much to making it a special time for the kids.

At the last stated meeting on December 11^th revisions to the Palmer Lodge by-laws were presented by Pat Cholka and are also available on our website. For the most part, the revisions consist of relatively minor changes and updates. These revisions will be presented and discussed at our January meeting.

Our first order of business in the New Year will be a Master Mason Degree for Brother Dale Van Dyke on January 7^th. This will be a very special occasion for Brother Van Dyke in not only being raised to the sublime degree of Maser Mason, but his son Jason, currently a serving Worshipful Master, will be visiting from Washington, D.C. to observe and share the occasion with him.

It is worthy of note that Brother Art Karos has taken on the responsibility to post our candidates during posting sessions held every Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm. These sessions have evolved into an unofficial gathering of not only the candidates for posting, but for other members to learn and practice their esoteric work. It has proven to be fun and light-hearted, as well as productive. Come join us and take advantage of the opportunity to improve your Masonic skills and hang out.

In what seems a very long time ago, I rapped on the inner door of Henry L. Palmer Lodge and entered the world of Freemasonry to begin my journey as a Mason, and thanks to your vote of confidence, encouragement and assistance, will mark a milestone in that journey by serving as your Worshipful Master for the ensuing year. The significance of serving in this capacity is doubly enhanced by presiding in the 100^th year since the inception of the Lodge. We will have much to do in continuing the regular business of the Lodge as well as having a number of events scheduled to celebrate our centennial. With the able assistance of an excellent cadre of officers and members, we should look forward to a rewarding, productive, and enjoyable year. Again, thank you for your confidence and trust in my abilities to lead our Lodge, and I will certainly endeavor to meet your expectations.

Greetings Brethren & Ladies of Palmer!

And now winter is howling at our doorstop… not unlike the seasons we must go through a birthing process of renewal which leads not unto a death but of a rebirth. Which is my verbose means of saying my time as Master of this lodge is coming to an end. It has been a good road traveled well with many interesting sights and doings along the way. Our third annual Jr. Warden’s Chili Contest was another success promoting friendship and brother… er… brother AND sisterhood as this year the Golden Rule participated in the contest (pictures are available on-line in the Photo Gallery section of our website.) We have recognized our 25/50 and even 30 year members, tipped our hats with gratitude towards our Past Masters and have bowed in reverence to those women who were and are the backbone of all masons: our ladies and widows. We have passed several Fellowcrafts and look forward to their raising next year. Again, symbolism of the rebirth process.

And as traditions go many great ideas were put forth most followed upon and some unfortunately had to be set aside. But our elections have been cast and a new set of officers with great ideas of their own are ready to be installed, do not forget that our installation of officers will be on Saturday, December 11^th at 7pm. Also, while I still get to remind you of things, our December Stated meeting is on December 10^th and I do hope you attend as I get to close out my year with a presentation of Palmer’s 2010 “Mason of the Year” and other recognitions. Also, Sunday, December 5^th finds our Pizza with Santa program which is a delight for children of all ages – attend to your calendars and make sure you bring the children!

I thank you for your support these past twelve months and hope that I leave you feeling that my time in the East was well spent. It is an honor to be called brother by a brother mason and it is ever so humbling to have been asked to lead such men.

Greetings Brethren & Ladies of Palmer!

Autumn has snuck up upon us once again as a reminder of the cyclic nature of our work. The harvests are in, the stores are replenished and even the hauntings are over for the time being. Yet with all this we see designed on the trestle board: broken columns, winding ringlets, and temples left unfinished and our thoughts go these places understanding what rough but hewn ashlars we remain. We are all accosted by the ruffians of time and with that we need to reflect on that rich yet elusive commodity: time. What have we left? What riches can we sow? How can we build that temple not made of hands?

We can start by remembering all of our brothers who came before us, our longest members our Past Masters and their mentors those women who made our brothers better men. We will be having our Past Masters’ 25/50 members’ and Widows’ dinner on November 5^th at 7PM in the dining hall at Henry L. Palmer lodge. This year we will be hosting an open table lodge during our hour of refreshment. I will be cooking up a delicious feast in celebration and need you to RSVP to me so that I know how much food to prepare. Our newly annual Jr. Warden’s Chili cook-off is on Sunday November 7^th, starting at 5PM. Brothers again I will need your assistance as we progress through our degrees, we have several Fellow Craft degrees and many parts to fill from the rituals especially in our lectures. All of this is a means to build our temples and dissuade those ruffians by bringing in new brothers. As nature cycles through death and resurrection so must our lodge cycle through the building and replenishing. This is accomplished by the wrought of newer members who bring their ideals to the quarry, where with guidance from Master Masons they can begin to chisel their ashlars into perfectly hewn stones.

With this in mind keep these dates handy our November Stated meeting is being moved from the 26^th to the 12^th due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. This is an important lodge event as this is when we will hold our election of officers for the forthcoming year. The democratic philosophy of our election process is not only a tenet of Freemasonry but is a responsibility incumbent upon every Master Mason. (As a note we will also be moving our December Stated from the 24^th to the 10^th). Mark your calendars as December 5^th will be our Pizza With Santa a favorite of all our children in spirit as well as in age and the 11^th has been reserved for the installation of our newly elected officers.

Time is perhaps our most exacting ruffian let us not dawdle then on happenstance or what might have been but rather ruminate on what can be.

Greetings Brethren & Ladies of Palmer!

One thing about Freemasonry that stands out for me is the fact that throughout the world I have brothers and friends from many walks of life that I would not have without the Blue Lodge. Because of Masonry we can size up someone at first glance because we know that they belong to a fraternity with high expectations. With that said I turn to the wisdom shared to me by my good friend Helmut Godejohann who handed me a gauntlet: he dared me “What makes you a Mason?” It is a question often asked by coworkers and passersby and the answer I give them is not exactly the same as the answer I give to a brother – and yet wholly different from that answer within the lodge. We are often quick to fall back onto a standard rhetoric either protected by ignorance or ritual. But one cannot fall back on either of these standards when asked this by a brother for they know these standards.

So brother to brother “What makes you a Mason?” Is it the giving of one’s self through charity and selflessness? Is it camaraderie away from the daily stressors of our chosen lives? Is it a deeper education within the mysteries of historical research and political manifest? Is it the depth of belonging to something greater than the sum of its parts? Or is it the pecan kringle and decaf coffee? These are the things I would like to discuss, flesh out from those brothers who have paved a path for me to swagger from. What stories and insight we must have in the shared collective of our brotherhood! We have seen some changes in the last few years with social networking via the internet – we are now more connected through time and space to each other than we have been and this allows for our stories to be heard. And yet we seem to be more distant with our own friends and families; and what of our own lodge? What of the histories and legends that exist within our temple? We need to hear these we need, or rather I would like to hear “What makes you a Mason?”

For some of our brethren especially our newly raised and initiated this question will resound with a fervor of legacy, of honor, of tradition. As they begin their work, again we demonstrate that Masonry is about fellowship and good will which can often be characterized through good work. Our labors never cease we still have a couple of Master Mason degrees to confer, we will be looking towards passing some Fellowcrafts. Our annual Jr. Warden’s Chili cook-off is on November 7^th, we have our annual Past Masters’ Dinner (the date still to be announced) Brothers as always I will need your assistance as we progress with these degrees, we have many parts to fill from the rituals especially in our lectures. I often live the Tennessee Williams’ quote “I’ve come to rely on the kindness of strangers.” How so much more fitting to rely on friends and brothers. Our October Stated meeting is on the 22nd at 7:30 pm. And thus I hand you this gauntlet: if you have read this tell me, I have something for you, a memento fitting perhaps, that and tell me what makes you a mason.

Greetings Brethren & Ladies of Palmer!

It seems like only last month we were discussing the pros and cons of going dark for the summer. And here we are being called back to labor – where has the summer gone? While it is good to be back in a working mode it is also difficult to say goodbye to that summer refreshment which can often lead to a productive laziness. We accomplished some great things during our refreshment. In June we raised another fellow: Art Karos so please welcome him in to our fold. We had our first Shrimp Boil to raise money for our Angel Fund which was held at the Astor Hotel, this was a grand event great food, great company and even a great band – we must send our sincerest regards to Diana Priewe who is the embodiment of our Masonic angel for all that she does in these affairs. We had our annual picnic with other local lodges at the Zoofari where the food and spirit was exciting as well as engaging, it was a great turn of event especially for our young ones. We also had another of our Team Trivia nights which went extremely well. Many thanks to the committees who put all of these events in order. Their work again demonstrates that Masonry is about fellowship and good will. With the waning of summer it is good to look forward to our next stated meeting to get caught up with everyone’s events: remember we meet on the 24^th at 7:30 pm.

We have many irons in the fire as we return to labor: we have our newly annual Jr. Warden’s Chili cook-off on November 7^th, we have our annual Past Masters’ Dinner (the date still to be announced) and we still have several degrees to confer we have to initiate several men who had petitioned our lodge and get them onto the path of enlightenment as well as raising a few more. Brothers again I will need your assistance as we progress with these degrees, we have many parts to fill from the rituals especially in our lectures as time away from the work often leaves us a bit rusty. I readily admit I have difficulty in remembering what is supposed to be said next; as our Brother Secretary can attest I have difficulty remembering what day it is!

I mention this not to highlight my inadequacies but rather to demonstrate that when we are away from things we often let things slip, what armchair philosophers call “out of sight – out of mind” and as things slip away we feel we are too far gone to come back: we do not know the words, the signs, certain points or we have forgotten our tokens. All of these we use as an excuse to allow ourselves to slip further away. But we need not fall away, ironically one of the first lessons we learn as Masons is the one we forget and that is we are a brotherhood a group of men related to one another by our passions and ideals. When President Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark out to explore the uncharted Louisiana Purchase he sent them with a coin or token that was to be shared with the strangers they would encounter. On that coin was engraved two men shaking hands – because he understood that this symbol could only represent peace and friendship to those who could not understand the words.

With that in mind as many of us feel the rusty creak in our bones as we return to labor I with pleasure extend my hand as a symbol of brotherly affection and invite all brothers who have slipped by over time, everyone who feels a bit rusty in their Masonic endeavors, to come to our next stated meeting. There you can refresh yourselves with good and true work.

Greetings Brethren & Ladies of Palmer!

The days of summer are nigh! This is the time we take from our duties and sharpen the chisel before progressing on. We all have different ways to make a clean edge: some of us will camp, fish, play or work in other endeavors; many of us will travel both literally and spiritually. We have had our second MM degree of the year and it went well, again a humble thank you to all those brothers who helped out this unity among men is the foundation of all masonry. Please join me in welcoming brother Daymean to our lodge. We have another MM for June scheduled on the 11^th and we will again need the assistance of our lodge members. As we discuss June our Annual Communication begins on the 4^th and your Elected Officers will again be in attendance representing Henry L. Palmer lodge as best as we can. Remember our last stated meeting before going dark is on the 25^th at 7:30 pm.

As spring nears an end we revisited our annual Spaghetti Dinner which went great as usual even though we changed the venue to Sunday to accommodate others who rent our lodge building. Most in attendance liked the change and as usual comments were praiseworthy on the food and service. Great thanks are sent out to those brothers and ladies who helped out this year with a special thanks to PM John Unz who gave of his time to make sure everything was hot and tasty. As well as a humble thank you to Lady Judy Wright who stepped in our late PM George’s shoes to keep up traditions as well as to keep our kitchen volunteers in line. And if anyone were to look into my garden spring is also the time of new discoveries and adventures bounded by old traditions: as well as in our lodge -- this year we had our first combined Ladies at the Table lodge with West Allis and Wauwatosa lodges. This too was a grand event and all who attended had a wonderful and even enlightening time. All the more to look forward to for next year.

Our annual scholarship dinner will be held on June 6^th at 5 pm. Also, this summer the lodge has opted to attend the Scottish Rite - Valley of Milwaukee’s summer picnic at the Zoo on July 11^th. We will have our own area to picnic in in conjunction with other Masonic lodges. Cost members and friends of Henry L. Palmer lodge will be $10 for adults, our children will be free. Please contact me for further information no later than June 30^th so that I can provide a headcount.

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances our lodge was unable to attend the degree competition – we can only look towards the future and hope we have the opportunity again. As we move forward we most always keep present that idea of sincerity which we so solemnly pledged our oaths with. Too often we forego that sincere part in our everyday lives whether it be that rhetorical “Hi, how are you?” or the handshake we provide out of necessity instead of brotherly affection. In our everyday lives we give “lip service” to all kinds of exchanges without thinking about the perceptions or ramifications. As was brought to me earlier this week people have to see Masons outside of the lodge; perhaps to the extent where we should wear shirts emblazoned with the words “Hi I’m a Mason: how can I help you?” However we do have this opportunity every time we speak to someone or shake their hand. We have at that moment to impress the tenets of freemasonry most sincerely and solemnly, with friendship, morality and brotherly affection. So instead of giving lip service to the ritualistic “Hi, how are you?” ask with sincere and vivid interest as to how people are doing, take an interest in their hopes and ideas, dreams and concerns, take their hand in a gesture of sincere warmth and demonstrate the tenets of freemasonry in your everyday lives -- save the ritualistic behaviors for our degree nights.

Greetings Brethren & Ladies of Palmer!

Spring is in the air! And with spring comes our yearly sprucing up of the lodge. This year’s spring clean up is on Sunday the 2nd This would be a great time to come down to lodge and have a coffee and a donut as we are in need of overseers for the cleaning of the lodge. April was a good month for Henry L. Palmer lodge we held our first of many Master Mason degrees as we raised brother Edgar Brooks to the sublime degree of Master Mason; congratulations brother and welcome to the lodge! Again many thanks to the brethren that helped out with the degree it is great when brothers can work together in a harmonious manner. It was wonderful to have visitors from other lodges present and assist in the raising of our brother; again many humble thanks to Frank Mayer for all the work he has done with our lodge. We are planning another Master Mason degree for May the 14th and it would be a grand event if we can get more brothers on the sidelines so pencil us in for May 14th at 7pm and come to lodge; not only is it good for the craft but it also is a great way to polish up any tarnished parts or points.

At press time we still have our Spaghetti Dinner and Ladies Table Lodge to take place but I am sure things went well. More will be discussed next Templegram. But speaking of next: keep in mind brothers that our stated meeting for May has been moved up to the 21st so as not to conflict with the Memorial Day weekend. That being said we also have a grave matter to vote on as a lodge. Our trustees have brought forth a proposal of necessity explaining the need to raise our annual dues. Discussions have been had and I am sure more are to come but either way we will be voting on this matter at our May stated meeting. So now more than ever your voice needs to be heard and it can only be heard at lodge. Also we have some new petitioners to our lodge and may well be voting on their disposition that evening also.

May 8th will find your officers in Wausau for a degree competition run under the direction of ritual master extraordinaire Pat Cholka we have a fine corps but we could still use your well wishes. Well, I could still use the well wishing and any other help being proffered.

With that the earth has demonstrated the miracle of rebirth once again flowers are blooming the sky is filled with the sounds of birds and forest animals, we can see the visible signs everywhere of renewal. These visual reminders of the miracle of life are reminders to each one of us to live our lives as a visual reminder of what Freemasonry is. We are the embodiment of the spiritual lodge, a visual tool for all to see and measure, to circumscribe and navigate by. We are the living compass and square, those useful and visible tools by which we communicate our friendship, morality and brotherly love.

Greetings Brethren & Ladies of Palmer!

Spring is upon us and with that the promise of renewal and rebirth so it is fitting that this April brings along our first Master Mason degree of the year. Brethren if you have not been to lodge lately this would be an opportune time to revisit some of the old ghosts as we raise our Fellowcraft Edgar Brooks to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on the 9^th. With the renewal of spring we also initiated a new member into our lodge on March 19^th utilizing our Degree Team which will be representing us in the Degree Competition on May 8^th in Wausau. There are still some rusty spots to work out but I have faith in our officers that we will represent Palmer lodge in a superb manner.

We had another great event take place in March for our Masonic Angel Fund. We held our first “Oscars Night” held at Tutto’s this was a grand affair as people came out to watch the Oscars and share in great food, raffles, prizes and a silent auction. A worthy cause, and a grand time for fellowship and frivolity, (a few things that are missing in our society today). The event was “simply marvelous” and we must applaud our Brothers Lee and John Wackman for setting this event up and also extend our deepest gratitude to our gracious and elegant hostess Sara Safina of Blush Salon for providing this venue for us. April brings about one of our oldest and most favored events and that is the annual Spaghetti Dinner. This will be held on Sunday April 25^th and is always a capacity filling event so request your tickets now either see one of your officers for tickets or a request can be made from our Brother Secretary Jack Jones. Another event will be the Combined Ladies Table Lodge that will be held at 6 pm on Friday April 30^th. This is a new endeavor for us as we join with West Allis and Wauwatosa lodges to provide a program for the ladies and widows of our brethren. All Palmer ladies and widows will be celebrated and there is no cost for them, escorts however will have to pay. Contact the Worshipful Masters of each lodge for more information.

Because of our more demanding economical times last month I challenged the brethren of Palmer lodge to assist in the refilling of the scholarship coffers for the Job's Daughters International of Wisconsin. A warm and hearty thank you to those brethren who have seen it necessary to send in pledges, but we still need more so again contribute what you can to help these young ladies in their educational endeavors. And while I am on the topic of economical hardships it is that time already, hardly seems like it has only been 20 years or so, but our lodge has been put into a situation where we will have to raise our dues. The trustees have reviewed our books and compared it with other lodges and have decried it necessary to raise dues in order to keep our lodge. At our stated meeting on April 23^rd they will put forth their recommendation and we will have to vote on this change to our by-laws. Remember brethren this change affects all of us and we all have a voice in our proceedings, your voice needs to be heard but to hear it you need to come to lodge and voice it.

All of us became Masons for the same reason: to become better men. What principles underlie our reasons or define this ideal differs greatly between us. Still, this one tradition solidifies us as brothers. And as often the story goes we enter into our obligation with zeal and fortitude, we do “our thing” and as life has a way of happening we find other worthy endeavors that fill our time. Part of Masonry for me is legacy. I came to Palmer lodge because it was the lodge of my father because what I saw in my father and the brethren around him exemplified the testament of “good men and true.” I have found it fortunate to still be in the company of such men. Being a Mason is an eternal commitment, our teachings suggest that our work goes beyond our earthly ways and this commitment should not be regulated to a yearly dues card and a monthly templegram. Every Mason has a lifetime of knowledge and experience within them; knowledge and experiences that needs to be shared for future Masons. Henry L. Palmer lodge #301 of Free and Accepted Masons will create history next year as we celebrate our 100^th year. This is your history, your legacy come be part of this so we can celebrate all our Masonic accomplishments – let us all be fortunate to be in the company of good men.

Greetings Brethren & Ladies of Palmer!

True to form March will come in like a lion. February saw us passing another Fellowcraft and welcoming back our brother Jimmy Ollie, a Fellowcraft of this lodge, who has returned safely to us from his tour in Iraq. I invite all brethren to come to our stated meeting to welcome brother Ollie: Welcome home brother! With all of these Fellowcrafts we need to get to work and raise some brothers to the sublime degree of Master Mason. We have a great core of officers but we still need help with the degree work and fortunately we have a school of instruction coming up this month on the 11th. Currently I am unsure if our host, Lake lodge, will be ready to resume work in their temple so please check the calendar on our web page http://www.henrylpalmer301.org for updates.

As you know our Masonic Angle Fund charity is doing well and our first Team Trivia Night of the year was held to great success and fun. Thank you to all who attended and I hope you had as much fun as those of us hosting it did. Our next Masonic Angel Fundraiser will be Oscar Night on March 7th at Tutto’s downtown Milwaukee. See the fliers on our web page http://www.angelfund.henrylpalmer301.org and about the lodge. This will be an elegant evening filled with camaraderie, fun, and curious anticipation. March 12th will be Wisconsin Lodge #13’s annual Ross Table Lodge please contact Brother Jason Braatz at Wisconsin 13 for more information. We are also planning a shrimp boil for the 27th. This is a new event and so we are expecting great things to come from it, we will post updated information of our website concerning this event.

As we go about our daily duties it is incumbent upon us to remember what those qualities are that make us Masons: especially in these difficult economic times. One of the tenets of our profession stresses charity. We all took an oath to help out others as far as their necessity may require and our ability permits and without material injury to ourselves or family. And while we are doing much charitable work we must also remember our families which include our extended Masonic families. Henry L. Palmer lodge has promoted education through scholarships to assist others in becoming better individuals. One of these scholarships which we support is for the International Order of Job’s Daughter and the time has come where we need to supply funds to support this endeavor. In the past our lodge has provided $5,000 in funds for this scholarship which is presented over a 10 year period. It is time now to refill these coffers. I believe that if every lodge member were to provide some relief without material injury to themselves we could easily replenish this necessary and worthy cause. Unlike other worthy causes that we encounter everyday this scholarship goes to our fraternal daughters here in Wisconsin and therefore we know how the funds will be used. So as March roars in I challenge all brethren to send a check of $50 or more to support this worthy scholarship fund. And if $50 deems too injurious then send whatever you are able to.

As March traditionally leaves us lamblike in its spring and rebirth repose let us remember the designs laid out on our sacred Trestleboard: “You are the light of the world.” I prevail upon you to let your light shine bright, be the beacon for others to orient upon - as the saying goes: “Lighthouses do not ring bells or fire cannon to call attention to their shining; they just shine on.” I encourage you to hold the square to your own breast and be able to exclaim ‘This is true work. This is square work. Such as is wanted for the building.’

Welcome Brethren!

January was a busy month and yet it seems like we have not even gotten started yet. We ushered in the New Year with our traditional New Year’s Morning Reception which was very well attended. I think perhaps it had to do with the cooks for this year: our new officers did an exceptional job in preparing and serving the breakfast. A good time was indeed had by all. January also saw the passing of two Entered Apprentices into Fellowcrafts; this was the first degree of the season and once again the ritual was completed in grand style by your new officers. Of course we are always open to outside help and so once again we need to send our heartfelt thanks to Frank Mayer for helping out on some of our lectures. As our core officers grow in their duties it is also incumbent upon our existing members to come down to the lodge and make sure we are meeting your expectations. With that we have a couple of Master Mason degrees coming up tentatively in March and I request the presence of all our standing members who can make it to come down and assist us. We have some openings for grumbling craftsmen and we sure could use your insight!

February is turning out to be just as busy also. Henry L. Palmer lodge will be hosting the District 12 Winter Meeting on Saturday February 20th and we are also hosting the School of Instruction on the 26th. Remember brethren all are welcome to these meetings and as they are educational I encourage you to come down and see what is going on. Due to our hosting of the School of Instruction our regular stated meeting will be moved from the 26th to the 19th of February. February 27th also brings back to our building the semi-quarterly Masonic Angel Fund Trivia Night. This is a great evening of brotherhood and friendly competition with monies going to our worthy cause. Test your wits and share in a story or joke with laughs and good eats.
Perhaps my favorite passage of all time is the “St. Crispian’s Day Speech” from Shakespeare’s Henry the 5th:

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers:

There is a magic in the word “welcome” that makes forget the word “stranger” and causes us to remember that we are brothers banded together for the good of humanity by a special tie. One who has heard the word “welcome” can never again be counted a stranger. Welcome is the keystone of hospitality. It connotes open doors, friendly greetings, sincere handclasps and solid footing. All of this I extend to you and bid you welcome brother.

January's New Year Message

Greetings!

I hope the New Year has found you well. We stand unique in our time as we end one decade and begin another. We stand upon the threshold of a New Year laden with high hopes for the dominance of that spirit of morality and fraternalism. Never before in our history has there been as great a need for the loyalty to the tenets of our profession. History has yet to give this era a title but we are experiencing the worst economic times even beyond the Great Depression. Remember brothers the humility and resolve you felt lo so long ago when standing in the East divested of all value save your own conscience. Let us go forward into the coming year with these high resolves: To live loyally, to show kindness, to be charitable. Words are not enough we need to put into practice our sacred obligation and help others wherever there is need of aid, comfort, relief; let us put forth a little more effort in spreading the gospel of cheer; let us waste less time and money on personal pleasures while there is so much constructive work to be done; let us be more willing to share with others those precious things of life which we have considered our personal heritage.

As we enter this New Year may the teachings of our Order have greater significance than ever before. Our work within the Masonic Angel Fund has a strong foundation but there is much hewing still to be done: (we have our monthly bingo event at the Elk's Lodge on Tuesday the 12th) . We have work in our lodge foundation as we bring some of our EAs into further light; (remember our Fellow Craft degrees on January 15th) and remember to support those young ladies who are always ready to assist us at Bethel 2's Installation on Saturday the 16th. Our lodge is polishing up its work and expanding as well: the lodge website is updated with our calendar of events so you may have ease at finding out what is happening here, plus we have added a photo gallery which displays all those great fellowship events we have undertaken. If you have not yet done so check out our website at http://www.henrylpalmer301.org. We will also be traveling in many ways this year as we combine our work with other lodges in hopes of promoting a deeper fellowship among all Masons. Keep your sights on the East and may the morning star light your way.

December's Missive

Brethren,

I am humbled by your confidence in my abilities to be master of our lodge for this year. The task before me is quite daunting as the maintaining and building of our temple has been fraught with the hands of many a worthy master much more accomplished than myself. My hope is that we can continue with the exemplar work that has preceded us. With that in mind I will be calling on our Past Masters and lodge members frequently to help me with planning degrees and the other lodge functions. We have always had great success with our Spaghetti Dinner and now our Chili Dinner competition and trivia nights are becoming that of legend.

As the saying goes ‘any endeavor worth doing is worth doing well.’ This year we will participate in the Grand Lodge’s degree competition, and the word on the street is that we may be the lodge setting the bar. We have several degrees coming up: four F.C. degrees with a couple of M.M. candidates still out there. We are also expecting more petitions in the near future. We are planning some inter-lodge activities as well as to go traveling.

I look forward to working with each of you to uphold those traditions of our Lodge that have been established over the last 99 years, and to make some new ones for those who follow. Remember the installation of your new officers is the 12th of December beginning with a meet and greet at 6pm with the installation at 7 pm. January 1st we have our customary lodge breakfast: this year prepared and served by your newly elected officers.

2010 is an exciting time for us, not only as masons but as brothers dwelling under the same planetary roof. I am excited about this year and am very confident in the line of officers.

U.S. Army Specialist James Watson received a commendation from W.M. Patrick Cholka of Palmer Lodge, along with a certificate of appreciation and the applause of his brethren at the November Stated Meeting. Brother Watson is being reactivated in January for a second tour of duty in Iraq.

W.M. Cholka also informed Brother Watson that his dues will be remitted by the lodge while he is away, serving his country on active duty. The idea of excusing servicemen on active duty from payment of annual dues was proposed in June, and was authorized by the brethren at the October meeting.

Brother Watson received his degrees in Palmer Lodge in 2008. He dedicated himself to rapidly learning and perfecting his posting so he could advance to Master Mason before going back on active duty. Now he anticipates being a full participant in military lodge activities wherever he may be billeted.

Brethren, greetings from the East,

Fall is here; it is that time once again when we begin thinking about the upcoming holiday season, shoveling snow and scraping ice, and our Lodge activities starting to heat up. October was a good month; no degrees, but we did have our first "Junior Warden's Chili Supper." We had 40 people attend the event and Khris Kay did an outstanding job preparing the food - no one left hungry!

November promises to be a busy month. We are planning our 25-50 year member recognition night for Friday, November 28th, and don't forget about Pizza with Santa on November 30th! In addition, we expect to have a couple of degrees to do that month as well. Looking a little further ahead we have our New Year's Breakfast coming soon too; I am excited to have Bob Strader, Grand Orator, joining us again as he did last year.

I was asked recently by a Grand Lodge Officer what I felt we accomplished this year. I started listing all the things we did: a number of degrees, a handful of new events, continuing our traditional events, updates to the building, and so on. I obviously didn't catch the meaning of his question as he asked again "but what did you accomplish?" After thinking about it a bit, I answered "teamwork." From the Past Masters to the newest Entered Apprentice, everyone has pitched in this year -- whether it was helping with a degree, planning one of the events, or with some of the work that needed to be done around the building. We should all be proud of everything we've done this year. But above all the rest, we came together as a team. We should be especially proud of that!

Brethren, greetings from the East

It has been an interesting first month as Master. With the holidays behind us, we can now start focusing on the remainder of the year with great anticipation.

We are starting to get busy with our degrees as well as planning some of our other functions. In January we initiated a new Entered Apprentice and passed two other Fellowcrafts. The two Entered Apprentices we initiated in December, as well as the one in January, are making terrific progress on their posting. It looks like we will be doing a few more Fellowcrafts in February; in fact, we have tentatively scheduled February 29 for these degrees. In addition, the two Fellowcrafts we passed in January will likely make short work of their posting, and we will be doing Master Mason degrees in the near future.

On Friday, January 25th. District Lecturer Frank Mayer attended our meeting. He did an excellent job putting us through our paces as we rehearsed rod work, floor work and the Master Mason degree as part of the annual School of Instruction. I would like to thank everyone who attended; our newer officers will benefit from this experience.

We will be having our first new event in March: “Trivia Night with XXXXX!” Brothers John and Lee Wackman are still putting the finishing touches on the event; it promises to be very exciting. They haven’t disclosed who XXXXX is yet. Further details will be available soon.

Finally, communication is an important part of being successful in any endeavor. Because each of us are busy, it can be difficult to communicate due to our individual schedules and commitments. Advances in communication technology, such as E-mail and cellular phones, have helped to make it easier to communicate. At the same time this technology has raised the costs of traditional communications such as postal mail, etc. With the rising costs of postage, we are investigating communicating our Templegram via our web site and E-mail. As part of our investigation, in the coming months we will survey each of our members for their preferred method of receiving the Templegram. When you receive this request, please complete the survey and return it as quickly as possible.

January's Message

Brethren & Ladies of Palmer,

Let me start by sincerely thanking everyone for their vote of confidence in my abilities to lead our lodge this year. It isn’t going to be easy, but with the help of our members, active and inactive, with a little luck, it should be a good year and maybe we will even have a little fun along the way!

I appreciate everyone who braved the weather on December 1st and came down for the installation. Brother Randy Randall did his usual stellar job conducting the installation ceremony, and many thanks to brothers Tim Kloss and Jim Urbanski for filling in for the Chaplain and Senior Warden for the people that couldn’t make it. All in all, it was a good night and it went off without a hitch.

This is going to be a busy year, and I will be calling on our members and Past Masters frequently to help me with planning degrees and the other functions we have coming up. We have three degrees coming up in January: one E.A. and two F.C. We are also expecting a couple more petitions in the near future, and we have two more F.C. and two M.M. degrees on the horizon. In addition to the upcoming degrees, we will be having a couple of new events in this year including a Trivia Night in February or March with a guest “Question Master.” Of course, we will be having the Spaghetti Dinner this spring, our Scholarship Dinner, and so on. I also hope to visit some other Lodges in the area during their stated meetings or other events they have going on.

I am looking forward to working with each of you to bring back some of the traditions of this Lodge that have been established over the past 96 years, and perhaps, make some new ones along the way.

I am excited about this year and am very confident in the line of officers for 2008.

Please remember to approach life with the same amount of zeal you approached your first degree with. I hope to meet all of the members of Henry L. Palmer Lodge before the end of the year.

Dear Brethren and Ladies of Palmer,
On November 5, 2005, the Lodge held our Recognition Nite Dinner. I have to apologize for not being able to being there, due to a couple week bout with pneumonia. I’d like to thank my wife Rebecca Kloss ( J.W. or Just Wonderful... as Jack Jones, has named her), along with Rollie Stendler and Jack Jones, for keeping our ship a sail, even though I couldn’t be there.

After the dinner, John Wackman III, received his 25 year pin, Deronda Randall, received a Certificate of Appreciation for his years of dedication to our lodge, and Rollie Stendler, received a fishing rod and reel for all his continued support both as a member and a trustee. CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU, FOR ALL YOUR SERVICE TO OUR LODGE, MY BROTHERS !!!

Brethren, in the beginning of summer, I had sent out a letter asking, " What can we do to bring those of you back to our Lodge, that haven’t been here in awhile ? " Well, first off I like to thank the brothers, who have made the travel back home again. It is truly an honor to be able to shake, each and everyone’s hand that has come through our gates once again.

The brothers, that came back, told me " it is nice to come home, and be amongst brothers and fellows ."
I’d like to challenge you my brother, if you haven’t made it down yet this year, to come to a future stated meeting or event.

I know that, not all of the same brothers are here as they were, when you first started but, we seek you because you are our brothers, and want to share the bonds of Brotherly Love, that we shall forever hold dear in our obligations as Masons. So I ask, please come down if within, the length of you cable-tow. Have the modes of recognition kept at you at bay ? Have no fear, and follow your conductor !

Your next opportunities, our installation of officers ( Call WM Tim Kloss for date & time) or the next stated meeting Friday, December 23rd, 2005. Our next stated meeting will be no tie or suit, a casual attire business meeting.

This year we’ve lost a lot of good brothers to our Grand Architect. We have made up a " Candidate Package," and it contains all the corn, oil, and wine to start a candidate on his way to becoming a Master Mason. If you would like a " Candidate Package," come down to the lodge and pick one up or we can send it to you. If we want to continue, we need to bring in more good men to make better.

I’d like to congratulate Brother Pat Cholka, and his Lady Kim on becoming parents of a new baby girl, Danicka Cholka in November.

On November 12, 2005, brothers Bill Tutaj, Khristian Kay, Jim Burton, and Jeff Laven became Knights of Malta in the York Rite. Congratulations, new Knights of Malta.

November's Message

Brethren & Ladies of Palmer
Hear the words of the wisdom of Solomon:
The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there shall no torment touch them.
In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: and their departure is taken for misery, and their going from us to be utter destruction: but they are in peace. For though they be punished in the sight of men, yet is their hope full of immortality.

On October 5^th, 2005, The Grand Architect of Our Universe, has opened the door, and called upon, Worshipful Master Bob Ross of Wisconsin Lodge #13 to lay aside his working tools, and come to rest in the eternal house not made with hands. Worshipful Master Bob Ross was only 35 years young, and is survived by his two young children Ian and McKenna, and many, many friends and relatives. Wisconsin Lodge #13 is setting up an educational trust fund for young children. If you would like to know more please contact Brother Mike Drout acting Worshipful Master. I know Brother Bob, is in heaven and having a great time at all the Car Shows ! God Speed my Brother.

Sir Knights, don’t forget the Orders of the Red Cross, and Malta, they will be held at Waukesha Masonic Temple at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, November 12, 2005. Lunch will follow the Orders. Please support our Companions in becoming Knights of Malta.

Our stated meeting night for November, will be Friday, November 11^th, 2005.
We are changing it due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. I hope this doesn’t inconvenience anyone. This will also be our elections night, please come down and share an apple with us. Our apple tradition continues…………..

I would like to thank the Royal Arch Masons, Eastern Star, and our Blue Lodges for giving so graciously to the Hurricane Katrina Relief. It’s not what Masonry, can do for us, but what we can do for Masonry and our Country.

My Brethren & Officers, one more Templegram to write, and I’m passing the collar and pen, over to your next deserving Master. I want to Thank Everyone, for allowing me to preside in the East. It is truly an honor to earn such a position. I have learned a great deal over the year, not only about Charity, and Relief, but about Brotherly and Sisterly Love. Any Past Master will tell you, it’s the strength and support of Brotherly and Sisterly Love that will guide, and weather your ship throughout all the days of your term. I’m also, grateful to our Grand Master Roger L. Magoon for reminding us Masonry is " A Way of Life."

Please read my appeal in the Templegram for Relief from Hurricane Katrina.

On a much lighter note, but most solemn one. I’d like to congratulate our Junior Grand Deacon on becoming, Sir Knight Joesph B. Harker on August 20th, 2005 at Galilee Commandery, Sussex, WI. He told us that becoming a Sir Knight, has been a long time in coming. Even though we were dark, we continued to labor in our duties as Masons. Brothers Jim Burton and Mike Drout were Exalted to the Most Sublime Degree of Ancient Craft Masonry, that is becoming a Royal Arch Mason. Brother Jeff Laven, and myself were in Wausau, WI on August 27th, 2005 to see them come through the Royal Arch. Congratulations Companions ! My hat, goes off to Brother Jeff Laven, for making the trip and supporting our brothers in their endeavors.

On September 22nd, 2005, Brother Bill Tutaj, was Greeted a Select Master. Congratulations Companion Bill. Brothers, if you would like to discover that of which, was lost, we can help bring you up to speed in the York Rite. On Thursday, October 6, 2005 at 6:30 p.m., Kilbourn Chapter #1 will be having a Dinner/ York Rite Presentation at Wisconsin Lodge #13. Please, come down and bring another brother with you.

Where else did we travel to last month ? Brothers Bob Horton, Bill Tutaj, Jeff Schallitz, and myself went all the way over to Aurora #30, to see the most impressive Entered Apprentice Degree, spoken all in German. I recommend to see it any time you get the chance. The German Lodge, does a great degree, and leaves quite an impression on the profane candidate. Also Jeff Schallitz, and myself went to Silas Shepherd Lodge #1843 in Black River Falls, WI on September 10, 2005. The Masonic Sword, was quite the conversation. As Senior Steward of Silas Shepherd I, turned in my first History Paper, it’s entitled “Masonic Light Inward or Outward.”

More buzzing in the hive, as Brother Pat Cholka, gave the Re-obligation, on September 29th, 2005. Brother Pat, thank you so much, for keeping us within due bounds of all mankind, and especially each other. A great ceremony, and a tasty refreshment was had by all following.

Did you enjoy the Magician, at our lodge ? Well, the Tripoli Shrine Temple is having a Magic Show, Comedy, Food & Fun night on October 7th, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. Adults $5.00 and Children $3.00. Call Cindy @ (414) 933-4700, for more information.

It’s been quite a busy last month. Have I forgotten about the Charity Car & Bike Show ? No, of course not, the best for last. I’d like to thank the Trustees, Palmer Lodge #301, La Fayette Lodge #265, Wisconsin Lodge #13, Kilbourn Chapter #1, and Eastern Star Chapter #194 for doing everything possible to make the show a great success. I’m so grateful to all of you, for working together and showing our community, who we are and what we’re all about. A special thanks to Worshipful Master Bob Ross, for helping drive our success. I hear the car shows only get bigger year after year.

Brethren & Ladies of Palmer,
Memorial Day, has come and gone, and let not the memory of those, who gave" the Greatest Sacrifice," fade on. Make us humble, and make us knowing, that they gave their life to keep our Freedoms going.

Donuts, donuts, where’s the donuts ? These are the words that could be heard on Spring Clean Up day. Well, I hear that they never found any donuts, but I can honestly say a lot of hard work was done. I’d like to Thank, the brethren & Ladies, that contributed that morning. A special thanks, to Rebecca Kloss, for helping, while Pat & I went to the District 11 meeting. Rebecca, does so much for me, and I’m very grateful to her. Behind every Clown, is a Great Woman.

I would like to congratulate Jeff Schallitz, Bill Tutaj, Eric Tess, Khristian Kay, and Jeff Laven for having reached their Zenith of Ancient Craft Masonry, that is The Royal Arch. I truly recommend going through The Royal Arch, to any of our Brethren that haven’t gone through, because it gives you "that which was lost." After going through, you will have the recovered the true "Masters Word."

On April 29^th, 2005, Palmer Lodge hosted a Sheepshead, tournament in which all the proceeds are going to Operation Phone Home. The funds will be sent off to the Masonic Service Association, and then be turned over to the United Serviceman's Organization. (USO) The funds will be used to purchase phone cards for the troops in Iraq. Thank you, Brother Pat Cholka for sparking, a passion in our Lodge that I didn’t know existed.

Once again, I must thank Kilbourn #1 R.A.M., and Golden Rule O.E.S. #194 for their help in fund raising for Operation Phone Home. We raised a total of $550.00, for our troops in Iraq. Thank You, so very much !!!

Brethren & Ladies of Palmer,
I would like to congratulate our newest Entered Apprentice, Brother Jason Holmes. He received is EA on April 29, 2005. I know it won’t be long, and we’ll need some help conferring his Fellow Craft Degree. So Brothers, if within the length of your cable tow, please give me a call if you like to be a part in the Passing of Brother Holmes’, next degree.

I’d like to ask all Brothers, who live in other states, to send in a letter to the lodge, and let us know how you are doing, if your still going to any lodge meetings, or just some brief history on when you became a Mason, and why. After receiving, your letter, we will read it in a stated meeting. I’d like to Thank, Brother Heinz Schmidt, who lives in Germany, and took the time to respond to the letter I sent him. THANK YOU, Brother Heinz ! Your letter was received, with smiles and laughter. It’s always good to laugh ! We have so many brothers who live quite the distance from our Lodge. I’m glad, we can still be a part of your family, no matter how far.

As for future events, Keep watching our Calendar. Some of the events coming up are Mothers Day Dinner/ Magic Show, Widows Reception Dinner, Fathers Day Dinner, July.. Brethren & Ladies of Palmer,

Buzz, Buzz, Buzz, “What’s that sound in our lodge as of late ? We’ll, we have quite a busy April, ahead of us, and our beehive is alive. Starting Friday, April 1^st, 2005 at 7:30 p.m., we have an EA practice for our new candidate, Jason Holmes. A week later, on Saturday, April 9^th, 2005 at 4:00 p.m., the great smell of our annual Spaghetti Dinner will take over our dining hall.

On Friday, April 15, 2005, at 7:30 p.m., your 2005 officers will be performing for the first time, “The Rusty Nail Degree,” come on down Travelers, and be refreshed in this special degree. Sorry, only Master Masons may attend.

Apprentices, Fellowcrafts, and Masters, if within the length of your cabletow, come to lodge on Friday, April 29^th, 2005 at 7:30 p.m., to see the arts and parts of bringing our new candidate, Mr. Jason Holmes into the Light Of Freemasonry. His EA Degree performed.

If you know how to play Sheepshead, and want to support our U.S. Troops in Iraq, come out and play Saturday, April 30^th, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. Please call our Senior Deacon Pat Cholka to RSVP (414)475-9660 I would like to thank all of you, that has helped contribute to Operation Phone Home, I’d especially like to thank, Kilbourn Chapter R.A.M. and Golden Rule O.E.S..
